US HISPANIC AND DIVERSITY NEWS

The number of Hispanic board members in Corporate America is rising but the rate of increase is too modest to achieve full Hispanic inclusion within the next 10 to 20 years, according to the 2001 HACR Corporate Governance Study.

The SBSC called for looser immigration policy saying, "The reality is that immigrant workers -- legal and illegal -- are filling vital roles in the economy, and many small businesses simply can't survive without them."

Mexico and the United States will continue talks on a deal for Mexican migrants and illegal residents this month, after the issue was put on hold following the Sept. 11 attacks.

BUSINESS BYTES

Even the SEC has a Spanish-Language Website now.

The rumors were true and NBC acquired Telemundo.

The number of unemployed Latin Americans increased from 7.6 million to 18.1 million in the 1990s and the quality of jobs deteriorated, according to an Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean report.

THE LEGAL FRONT

Ford Motor was sued in Illinois for charging higher fees to Latino car buyers.

The INS reported that the 195,000 H-1B cap was not reached in fiscal year 2001 ending September 30 with only 163,200 visas extended.

The Supreme Court discussed the Colorado case against affirmative action.

RECRUITING TOOLS & USEFUL LINKS

In her article Job Board Trends: Going Niche, Karen Osofsky discussed the future of niche job boards. She writes:

"Recruiters can also do their own part to foster a diversity of candidate resources by supporting niche sites... Spread the word on your favorite niche sites. Instead of verbally attacking the "giants," you should shout out the merits of your favorite niche sites. Encourage your colleagues to shift their spending and try new things."

We concur - thanks Karen.
